University of Madras | India

Dr. Manikandan Elumalai’s academic journey is characterized by a steadfast commitment to excellence and a passion for chemistry. He completed his B.Sc. in Chemistry from Thiru. A. Govinthasamy Govt. Arts and Science College, Tindivanam, affiliated with Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore, with first-class distinction from 2008 to 2011. This was followed by a B.Ed. from Sri Velavan Institute of Education under Tamilnadu Teachers Education University in 2011-2012, graduating with first-class distinction. He then earned his M.Sc. in Chemistry from R.K.M. Vivekanantha College, University of Madras, from 2012 to 2014, achieving first-class honors.

Dr. Manikandan has garnered extensive research experience through his Ph.D. studies at the University of Madras under the supervision of Dr. N. Rajendiran from February 2016 to August 2023. His research focused on the synthesis of bio-surfactant and organic compound-templated noble metal nanoparticles/nanoclusters for biological and chemical applications. Additionally, he has a rich teaching background, having served as a Lecturer at Govt Central Polytechnic College, Tharamani, Chennai, from June 2014 to January 2016.

Dr. Manikandan’s contributions to the field of NANOSCIENCE are significant. His research involved the synthesis of cholic acid conjugated D-penicillamine (NCPA) templated fluorescent ultra-small noble metal nanoclusters and the size and shape controllable synthesis of NCPA capped noble metal nanoparticles. His work in bio-imaging studies using fluorescent noble metal nanoclusters and the development of colorimetric, fluorometric, and biosensing methods for heavy metal ions using silver and gold nanoparticles/nanoclusters has had a profound impact on both chemical and biological applications. His research title was “N-CHOLYL PENICILLAMINE ENCAPSULATED NOBLE METAL NANOSTRUCTURES FOR BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL APPLICATIONS.”

Dr. Manikandan's influence extends through his participation in numerous workshops and conferences, such as the RSC-IITM Desktop Seminar on Environmental Sciences, International Seminar on Sciences for Sustainable Development, and various others focused on smart materials and polymeric materials for industrial applications. His dedication to NANOSCIENCE is further evidenced by his participation in the IP Awareness/Training program and the Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme.

Dr. Manikandan's research findings have been widely cited in the academic community, reflecting the importance and relevance of his work in NANOSCIENCE. His expertise in various instrumental techniques such as X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Visible (UV-Vis) Spectroscopy, Fluorescence Spectroscopy, and High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), among others, underscores his comprehensive understanding and practical knowledge in the field.

Dr. Manikandan Elumalai's legacy in NANOSCIENCE is marked by his innovative research on noble metal nanostructures and their applications. His future contributions are poised to further advance the field through the development of new protocols for atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters, purification methods for fluorescent noble metal nanoclusters, and the synthesis of polymer-nano hybrids for various applications. His research interests also include the development of optoelectronic devices, medical imaging, biochemical and food sensing, and hybrid nanostructures for supercapacitor and solar cell applications. His ongoing work will undoubtedly continue to inspire and shape the future of NANOSCIENCE.
